AUDITIONS (Posted April 1, 2023)
Beginning in 2023, we are requiring a specific major and harmonic minor scale for each instrument. These have been selected to expand students harmonic vocabulary (one in a sharp key, one in a flat key), and clarify required articulations. This change has been made to even the auditions so all students on an instrument are playing the same scales, in the same way. We have also changed the chromatic scale to be "full range" (a students best low note to their best high note). This was done so students can still demonstrate their range.
To help clarify the audition requirements, we have two ways to view the information - the "Directors Poster" gives all the information for all the instruments on a single document. We also have an instrument-specific sheet that not only gives the same information, but also shows the first measure of each etude so students/directors can be sure they are working on the correct etudes. If you have any questions about the audition, please consult the individual instrument audition information before contacting us.
Clarification on piccolo, E-Flat clarinet, and English Horn: For these instruments, placement in the Colorado All-State Band is based on the "standard" instrument (flute, B-flat clarinet, or oboe), and the specialist is selected from their specialist audition. So, a piccolo player must be accepted into the band with their flute audition - then the highest scoring piccolo audition FROM THOSE SELECTED will be named the piccolo player. Remember, there is only one audition fee for both auditions. In the event the selected literature requires other non-standard instruments (soprano saxophone, contra clarinets, etc.), students who have been accepted to the band will be given the opportunity to audition for those specialty instruments.
Also, for 2024, we are changing so all euphoniums (treble and bass clef) will play the same etudes (in the past, treble clef would play the trumpet audition, and bass clef would play the trombone audition). Any euphonium player that plays in treble clef should receive a transposed version of the audition when they click on the link (with the etudes written out).
Beginning this year, string bass, piano and harp players will have the same requirements as the other instruments. Audition etudes are taken from select band literature. String bass auditions will be accepted every year, but piano and harp auditions will only be posted/accepted in years when the selected literature requires the instrument(s). Students interested in auditioning on piano or harp should check for audition information on OCTOBER 1.
